History The Giles County High School Band, known as the "Band of Gold", has represented the Giles County School System and the State of Tennessee since the early portion of the twentieth century. What began as a small, non-marching orchestra at the old Pulaski High School has grown to an organization as large as 110 members. Celebrating its 83rd year in 2009, it is one of the oldest and most award garnering school band programs in the State. The Giles County Band has no definitive records of membership and size before its first published picture in the 1927 Pulaskian yearbook. It was initially organized as a small, co-ed orchestra, primarily reliant on piano and brass. In the early years the program was classified as a club and not sponsored by a full time faculty member, rather, it was led by students and various members of the community who taught music privately. The first named director, Sidney Roller, appeared in 1938. This is also the first record available of the band performing at football and basketball games with majorettes and a drum major. Under the direction of Herbert Guy, in 1941, the band purchased and appeared in Ohio State University style band uniforms, the first uniforms ever worn in Pulaski by the band. It was during this time the band began performing marching shows during the Pulaski High football games. Entering the 1963 school year, a new era in the band's history began. Under the leadership of Bob Lee, the band was reorganized from a less military organization to a part of the fine arts department. Mr. Lee redesigned the now 22-year-old uniforms and revolutionized the style and performance level of the band. They took on a more competitive marching style and began to focus more on just a few shows every year, as opposed to a new show for every game. This era also brought the first appearance of the "Band of Gold" nickname. In fall, 1990, the "Band of Gold" began another chapter in its history with the naming of Steve Williams as its director. With the assistance of Larry Watson, the band backer president and Cindy Pride, assistant director, Williams took over a program with dwindling numbers and diminishing successes and helped the group to ascend back to greatness, culminating with the band winning three consecutive Tennessee State AA Marching Band titles in 1997, 1998 and 1999, a feat equaled only once in the 25 year history of the competition. The current chapter in the history of the "Band of Gold" began in July of 2006, with the naming of its 20th director, Jason Gospodarek (since 2002, the former assistant director under Cindy Pride) and the school's ninth assistant director, Brandon Grieves. Under their leadership the band continued its State AA tradition, leading the band in back to back state finals performances. As of 2007, the Giles County Band has made finals 12 times, more than any other band in the state. The "Band of Gold" has appeared in bowl games dating back to the 1940's, numerous Tennessee Gubernatorial Parades, named as an official Tennessee Homecoming 1986 band, performed for at least two US Presidents, has been selected to play at the Tennessee Music Educators State Concert Festival and has toured seven states, most recently winning Best Band of the 2007 Atlanta St. Patrick's Day Parade. When the Giles County High School "Band of Gold" takes the field or appears in concert, the reaction of the audience indicates that the band is truly not just a Giles County tradition and treasure, but a source of pride for all students, alumni and Tennesseans. |
